White Sands – Surface Surveys (2018)

White Sands presents a rare aerial study of the world’s largest gypsum dune field, a singular landscape in the American Southwest hidden within U.S. military-controlled airspace. Surrounded by bases including White Sands Missile Range - site of the first atomic bomb detonation - the park’s airspace is restricted from ground to space.

Securing the first-ever clearance for an aerial survey by a civilian, we flew under continuous military escort in a doorless Robinson 44. From the air, the gypsum bore a striking resemblance to dripping plaster - a direct visual parallel to the mineral's primary application. White Sands is one of six individual studies in a series of protected desert physiographies titled Surface Surveys (2015 – 2019).
