Winterblue (2019 + 2023)
Winterblue is a study of color within a monochromatic landscape born from an 11-day search for our missing dog during a January snowstorm. Through a community-wide search effort and solitary nights spent sleeping in a car amid the frozen darkness, the project explores loss, reconnection, and the shifting notion of home in the post-pandemic era - revealing both winter’s harshness and its unexpected beauty.
Across 17 pre-dawn trips to Idaho’s Camas Prairie—often in subzero temperatures and high winds—the imagery exhibits how atmospheric conditions shape a camera sensor's field of vision and reception of color - extracting vivid blues from a purely white landscape. The photographs selected for this parcel were taken in 2019 on a once-deserted back road, now crowded with commuters and construction. Captured with medium format camera equipment, the images are blurry and present a dreamy, hazy recollection of life before the pandemic.
